Ways To Save, Part 1: Sale Shopping

Let's talk about ways to save money! This subject is near and dear to my heart. I have, out of necessity, been frugal when I was a stay-at-home-mom and my kids were little. Even though I'm working part-time now, I'm here to tell you- kids get WAY more expensive as they get older. There's not a lot of coupons that are going to help you with braces and school trips to Europe. :-)

And with the economy as it is, I've felt the need to become more disciplined with our household budget. I've found a number of great blogs that will help you get started saving money, and you'll find some listed in the sidebar with some of my favorite web sites. What I'd like to do at OC is show you (and hopefully inspire you) what I'm doing to save money. (Our household is a self-employed one, and saving money is much more profitable than earning more- from a tax perspective. It's a lesson we are learning...)

One of the best is Money Saving Methods. There are numerous ways to save on this site. One of the things I have done recently is start being more purposeful in shopping for gifts, what the site calls, "sale shopping." I've made a list of all the gifts I need to get for the year (mainly birthdays, but also mother's day, baby shower, etc.), so I know what I need whenever I'm out shopping. The goal is to never pay retail, so I need to be prepared if I stumble on a sale.

Which is what happened on Tuesday when I took my son to Barnes and Noble to use a gift card. They had two tables of games, etc. marked down 75%. I was able to find 3 gifts for my daughter, one for my son, and one for a niece:

I also found a couple of books for the preschool I teach at 50% off. Total retail price of these items was $100.73 and I paid $27.93 for a savings of $72.80! These are quality items - an Einstein Touch Series Word Search, a leather sketch book, two Puzzlebits, and a small puzzle.

If I had waited to shop the week or so before the event, as I often do, I would've had to pay the retail price for whatever gift I found, because I wouldn't have had the time to shop around. It's already been well worth the small amount of time I invested making my list. Now my challenge is to find storage!

I'm pretty inspired by this and hope you will be too!
