Make A Cake (and Eat It Too!)

Sunday was my daughter's thirteenth birthday (oh my...) and we used this fun idea for decorating her cake that we saw in a magazine. It was a hit, but more importantly, it was EASY and fun, too.

Here's what the table looked like. We weren't sure whether the cake would be enough, so we made the cupcakes, too. I think they turned out really cute and it would be fun also to have just cupcakes.

Here's a close-up of the cake. We made a chocolate-fudge layer cake (which I cut to make four layers) and filled the layers with peanut butter frosting. I frosted it with a French Silk Chocolate Frosting (my absolute favorite), piped the bead edging and the birthday greeting. Then my daughter went to work decorating.

She used sliced almonds and brown plain M&M's to make the flowers and placed them "randomly" (she said this was important).

The cupcakes have a flower placed in the center. I did shoot some peanut butter filling in the centers using my decorating bag and tip - I didn't want anyone to go without! I just filled them from the top and then covered over the filled hole with frosting.

Here's a close-up of one of the cupcakes - you can see how easy the flower is to put together. What girl wouldn't like a cake or cupcakes like this for a birthday? She might even like to decorate them like my girl did!

I'd love to know if you make these!
