Carving your pumpkin all by yourself.
Our beautiful and creative thirteen year old daughter had to take matters into her own hands after seeing that it was Halloween Day and the pumpkins had not been carved.
Gone are the days of pumpkin carving parties (hard when you have a mom who gets nauseous at the smell of pumpkin goo), family get-togethers, or even just the family sitting with you.
No, when you're the youngest around here, you realize that it's the 31st and if you don't do it, no one will.
Luckily, we are blessed with a girl who doesn't hold it over our heads- she just smiles and digs in, literally.
In our defense, we were not just sitting around watching football (though I'm sure someone would've liked to...). It was a workday and we had a wonderful friend here lending a hand so we could have a back porch and breezeway from the new garage.
Finally. I think it's been 4-1/2 years of stepping on a "temporary" 4"x8" wood step after raising the door when we remodeled the old garage into living space (Wouldn't it be nice to have a link here to the post and pictures of this? Hmmm. I really have to get that part of the remodeling series done.).
Anyway, when our daughter decided to do something, she downloaded a template and went to work carving the coolest bird into just the outer layer of the pumpkin. She just used whatever tools we had and figured it out for herself, even deciding to take some flesh off of the inside in order for the candlelight to be seen better.
Here it is finished.

And here it is on Halloween night with the glow of a candle showing through. I wasn't really able to capture the effect on camera, but at least you can see how cool it was.
What started out kinda sad, turned into a "wow" moment.
