We had clam chowder tonight for dinner. It was on the menu as part of the Pantry Challenge to use up potatoes and a couple of little cans of clams I had in the cupboard.
This is the "cottage" way. This is frugality, using up what we have.
It was warm and tasty, but here's my question:
Can it still be called clam chowder if it has more bacon than clams? Is frugal clam chowder really just bacon chowder?
I asked this at the table, but everyone just ignored me. Maybe you won't. :-)

I've noticed that the most expensive ingredient usually takes the title. Your Chicken Artichoke dish wouldn't sound nearly so good if it were called a Chicken Mushroom dish. Bacon chowder doesn't sound very impressive! P.S. I rechecked the prices for beef at Northern Lights, and was shocked! I payed $2/lb last summer at the Spfld farmer's market. Maybe that was just an "introductory" price. Thanks again for your great blog and great recipes!
ReplyDeleteUm? Do you think anything labeled "Bacon" first is bad....?
ReplyDeleteLMSO!
Bacon chowdah ( speaking from MA.) with a little clams sounds great! What if you think of it as Bacon Chowdah with a little extra good protein thrown in? Then you can really feel good about it! You're making bacon chowdah healthy!
mmm...bacon....
Yes and yes!
ReplyDeleteThere was a clam in it, so I consider it clam chowder. :)
ReplyDeleteShanzanne- Good to know, I thought I'd missed something at N. Lights. Although I looked the Christmas before last summer- wonder if they sell it cheaper at the market?
ReplyDeleteThanks, guys, for helping me with my question! I still like a good chowder...
