After our rainy, cold spring it took a little longer for the roses to burst into bloom, but they are sure blooming now, and man, I understand why they are often called the “queen of flowers.” They are so beautiful, it’s amazing really.
And thanks to my daughter’s cool photography skills, I’ve got some great pictures to share with you:
David Austen English Roses are my favorite for their scent and old fashioned look. This is a bright pink one called “Mary Rose.”
This lovely, blush pink traditional rose is called “Pretty Lady.” It is a floribunda-type that is relatively new, but has proven pretty disease-resistant in my garden. Which is saying a lot because I loose lots of leaves to blackspot starting…well, just about now. In fact, most already are starting to loose some lower leaves, sadly.
This, of course, is the well-known Abraham Darby, an English Rose by David Austen. It has the strongest scent of all the roses I’ve grown- truly heavenly. And the color? A muted combination of apricot and pink. As it matures like in the picture, it opens to a slightly yellow center.
Words really don’t do this one justice.
You know those little roses that are meant for gift-giving as an indoor plant? This is one I got a couple of years ago and I stuck it in the ground when it was looking pretty sad, but wasn’t dead yet.
Sadly, that happens quite a bit around here.
It shocked me by actually growing and has produced a couple of these creamy blooms. Trouble is, the grafted root has sent up a three foot stalk in the middle of the plant that is full of little yellow-red buds. I don’t have the heart to cut it off yet with all those buds ready to bloom, but it’s day is coming…
Alright, now it’s time to show us what’s going on in your gardens.

I believe a cottage can be anywhere or anything (condo, ranch, farmhouse) as long as you have a "cottage mentality" which puts people above things, celebrates imperfections, embraces simplicity, and finds joy in everyday life. Thanks for joining me!

I sure do admire roses, and have yet to plant any in my garden. My neighbor right next to me had a landscaper come in and create a bed in between our houses with a stone wall (yum – love stone) and they put some small pink/orange roses in there. So I get to have the pleasure of having then around without the upkeep… Although I am tempted to help her with deadheading them when I am out there with my cutters and see too many expired heads.
Lovely pictures! It’s great that the one you received in that planter made it outside – would be interested to see what those blooms look like before you cut them off… (curious now!).
Happy Gardening!
The roses are beautiful. One of these years, I am going to try to grow them.
Thanks for hosting the garden party.
pretty photos. one day…
i don’t have much to share at the garden party today, but i’ll be back later to see what others have been up to.

Gorgeous roses! Your daughter took very pretty pictures.
I’m joining you for Tuesday Garden Party for the first time.
Have a nice day!
Your roses are yummy! Usually we are awash in roses at this time of year but our cold, wet spring drug on til…well, last week! But, we have rose buds!! Your garden party is always fun, thanks for hosting.
Just beautiful….all of your photos….nothing like a gorgeous rose to being a smile to your face!
David Austens are the Best! Absolutely beautiful, Jami. Thanks for sharing and for hosting… looking forward to touring over the next couple of days.
Wasn’t last week sublime?? And now back to cooler weather?! Oh well, it is nice to work when it is not quite so hot:)
I love your pictures! I have a couple of David Austin roses–the big yellow ‘Graham Thomas’, which I have trained as a climber to go up a turquoise-painted arbor, and ‘The Prince’, which I don’t see for sale anywhere anymore, but is a lovely smaller shrub that has beautiful double deep burgundy blooms.
Also, enjoy the outdoor chandelier instructions–I had more pictures, but had computer not reading the camera technical difficulties this morning. I will try to add more pictures about this topic as I can get the computer and camera to cooperate!
Sorry for a second comment, but I tried to get the embed link for your Tuesday Garden Party button to work on my site, but I couldn’t get it to work. I am not very computer savvy, so I probably did something wrong, but any tips or tricks you have for this would be appreciated! Thanks!
Minerva- Sorry about the problems with the button. I have seen it on other sights, so I think it’s OK on our end. Tips: make sure to copy all the code and if using blogger, paste it in HTML mode- that usually works for me. Good luck!
I am in WordPress and apparently needed to paste it in HTML mode–got it work work.
Thanks!

Your roses are lovely! I especially like the Abraham Darby! I have a couple of wild roses that have popped up. I am waiting until they are a little stronger and then I will transplant them in a place that is more convenient for me.

Your roses look beautiful! You might also enjoy one my Momma loves, it called Belinda’s Dream. It blooms constantly from Spring until frost. Beautiful pink rose.
Candi- I grew one in our other house I loved called just Belinda- I wonder if it’s a parent? I’m going to look that one up.
English roses are the best and Abraham Darby is the king. I lost mine this last winter. I can just look at your picture and inhale that absolutely amazing spicy fragrance. There is nothing else like it! Thanks for sharing
