Tuesday Garden Party- A Spring Harvest

I've just gotta say that I had a great time visiting everyone's garden posts last week- you all are rockin' gardeners!

Here's a look at what I'm harvesting from my garden:

This is about our third bowl of beautiful berries (try saying that fast three times). We've had strawberry shortcake and I've frozen some as well as eating our fill, of course.

Every year I try to plant an early and a later broccoli but they all seem to mature at once. We've got four more heads in the fridge. This is the first of our cabbage, though, and the first year I've grown the early, heirloom pointy head variety. It's definitely ready before the traditional ones.

I've still got some lettuce (this is a butterhead) in the garden, with some more warmer weather ones that should be ready in a few weeks. The spinach, however, bolted just as some of the leaves got big enough to harvest. Since it hasn't been warm, I can only conclude that it had been in the ground long enough and was done whether it was warm or not!

See that lone onion? That's a Walla Walla sweet that I planted from starts a couple of months ago. Some of them have decided to send up a seed stalk (you can see it in the middle of the leaves (is that what they're called on onions?)- it's pretty small here) and I pick them as soon as I notice them so that I can still use them for green onions. If left in the garden, the hard center seed stalk becomes bigger and less of the onion is usable. You just have to use them as you get them sometimes in the garden.

Now it's your turn to link up your garden posts-

  5. Your harvest looks good. I'm still waiting.
In case you didn't know, you can just pinch off that pod thing where the onion is about to flower and leave it in the ground longer.

  11. Hi Jami-

I'm glad we have this TGP thing because it really makes me keep up on my pictures and posting for my friends and family. Otherwise, I wouldn't document it at all!

Anyway, you may or may not know this, but I just had a baby a few weeks ago which makes it four kids for me! I have been trying to keep up like crazy with my housework and meal planning but it has been too hard. Anyway, I looked up all your meal planning secrets and it really truly helped simplify it for me so I can plan for our family. Like your idea of having a theme for every night and just filling in the blanks is a great idea and I tried it this week and it was a million times easier for me. So thank you!! I'm truly glad I found your site. Maybe one day we oregonians will meet up!

PS - you mentioned that you teach preschool - I also taught eight years of preschool before "retiring" to stay at home with the kiddos.

  12. I love the strawberry pics - they have me drooling and wishing I could eat them up! I actually will be trying your Slow Cooker Chicken Chilli Recipe sometime very soon. Ever since I read your post I can't get it out of my head!

    Thanks for sharing!

  14. The berries ARE delicious, guys. :-)

Sharon- I'm planning on linking up!

Henny Penny- whenever I've tried just snapping the seed heads off (like garlic), it makes a perfect tube to transfer water (as in the form of rain, which we do get here...) to the center of the onion, rotting it from within. So I just pull when I see them to at least use some of the onion.

Glad to have you back, Ott A., and welcome Denise!

Shannan- yes I read on your blog about your new one (a cutie!) and left a suitably amazed comment at what you're able to get done- kudos! I am SO glad you found the menu planning tips helpful, it really can make life easier. And I would love to meet up one day- we should plan a lunch or dinner with the other Oregon TGP-ers. :-) And preschool, too? Wow.

Marsha- hope you like it. :-)
