Are you wanting to save money, make nourishing foods, and do things for yourself and your family, but don't know where to start? Or worse, you're overwhelmed with all the information out there and give up before you start because it seems like too much work?
These basics are easy, mostly quick things you can do right now that will make a difference to you and your family, either monetarily or nutritionally. Once you have success in these areas you may find it easier to take other, maybe more complicated steps to the life that you envision for you and your family.
I will revisit some favorite old posts with new information and add some new things that all align with our "cottage mentality" criteria: simple, frugal, fun, and putting people before things.
Yes, the people in our lives are what this is all about, and it's easy to forget that when we get caught up in the doing. The goal should be to help us and those we love be good stewards of money and resources, to eat (mostly) nutritious food for optimum health and growth, to do for ourselves, and to take joy in sharing time together.
What better time than the summer to get "Back to Basics" when we have time to explore new things and maybe even share these activities with our kids and family? There are a few months before schedules get full again in the fall that we can use to make these basics become new habits, so let's do it!
Here's what we will be talking about each day next week:
Monday, July 5- Simple Breads to Make
Tuesday, July 6- Simple Steps to a Garden (and Tuesday Garden Party links to see some great gardens- lots are new gardeners with great ideas!)
Wednesday, July 7- Simple All-Occasion Cards to Make
Thursday, July 8- Pantry Basics and Freezer Jam
Friday, July 9- Simple Straight-Stitch Sewing (napkins & pillows)
I'll be doing some follow-up posts the next week, so be sure to check in each day and the next- better yet, become a subscriber (in sidebar) so you won't miss a thing!

ReplyDeleteThanks Jami for the basics. I look forward to next week!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great series. I look forward to it.
ReplyDeleteWow-
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for these. I've already incorporated many of your tips and they are working great! Hoison-glazed salmon last night for dinner and it was a hit! Thanks Jami - so glad I found your blog.
Hi Jami: This is a great idea--I will be checking in this week!
ReplyDeleteI actually have a question about a post you did last year on how to make whole wheat pita bread. You mentioned that the pita breads will crisp up as they cool after being removed from the oven. Will they get softer again if they are reheated? I wanted to make some for a party, but would like to make them a day in advance so I have less last-minute stuff to do.
Thanks so much!

Oh, I'm so excited about this...I have "champagne" taste and I'm living on a soda pop can budget..I don't drink alcohol...but I think you get the idea...this will be loads of fun. Thanks for thinking of these and sharing it with all of us. love and hugs from Southern Oregon, Heather :)
ReplyDeleteJust found you through Finer Things. I am looking forward to your week of "basics" posts. It's just what this country girl in Kansas likes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kudos, guys! Hope you will find some useful things. :-)
ReplyDeleteMinerva- I think I said to cover them with a towel so they stay soft right after taking them out of the oven. If you do that, they will remain soft. I have often done this in advance and just store them in ziplock baggies and they're great. Have fun!
Kristin- Welcome from one wanna-be country girl to a real one. :-)
