After waiting weeks, telling you all how I was checking practically daily, and even admitting that I had picked and eaten corn that wasn't really fully ready... the corn was finally ready last week!
You'd think I'd remember this next year and get the dumb corn planted a bit earlier, huh?
Let's not hold our breaths, OK?

Here's what I picked one day last week. See all that beautiful corn? Yum.
On another note, the tomatoes have taken a weird break- with 18 plants I usually need 5-gallon buckets to harvest at the end of August. Hummm.
We did have ripe corn to have with our BLT's last week and we had corn for a snack one day when my nieces were visiting (and many more meals, but no need to go into that...). They helped shuck the corn and found this:

A little baby corn growing next to the "mama." They loved this and thought it looked just like the corn that you get with Chinese food.

Hmmm, I've never seen this, actually, and I've grown this variety before ("Quickie"), too. Do you think you could eat this little baby in a stir fry?

However, the most important part is the tasting. This is my first bite of corn for the season, and let me tell you, it was sooooo good with just some butter and salt.
My nieces thought so, too, declaring it "The best corn I've ever eaten!"
Smart girls.
Anybody else got corn, or am I hopelessly behind?

Jami, it looks like you grew the perfect corn! I've seen many pictures of insufficiently pollinated corn from home gardens on various garden blogs this year, so it's encouraging to see that yours did so well.
ReplyDeleteLove corn....during the summer we have BLTs and corn on the cob, atleast, twice a week. It is such a treat, for such a short period of time....sorta like strawberries! Roasted beets ala your receipe and made the salad...talk about good! I'm going to freeze more beets for winter salads.
ReplyDeleteYou could probably sell that corn on ebay for big bucks!!
ReplyDeleteYour harvest looks terrific. My tomatoes have had a permanent lull this year! And I have yet to pick any corn, so I'd say your schedule worked pretty well:) And now, what is with this weather? I am really hoping that September will be nice so I can get some red tomatoes from the garden before winter! Otherwise I guess I will be canning green tomatoes.
My brother in law, formerly of Vancouver, WA had a yearly corn party.
ReplyDeleteWhen his corn was ready he had a great party in his lovely backyard.
We always looked forward to his yearly to do.
Your garden is yielding some wonderful treats! The corn looks so yummy....I can almost taste the butter dripping of of it!
ReplyDeleteThat top picture of your garden harvest could be in a magazine, so beautiful. I love corn. I wish I had more room to grow.
ReplyDeleteThe linky didn't take my picture. I have two plants and I don't know if they are weeds or flowers??? need help from your knowledgeable garden readers.
thanks for the carnival.
It is good to go out haverst your one food, taste better!
ReplyDeleteA corn harvest-time extravaganza! It really pays off in the end...
ReplyDeleteThat does look like the best tasting corn ever!!!
ReplyDeleteTell Mr. Jami :) thanks for the directions on how to create the button… I had my Mr. Marsha help me out with it ;)
Not everything scrumptious needs tending in the garden:) I thought I'd share what we are preparing from the other side of the fence.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jami!
