Canning with Bon Ami & Giveaway

canning-pickled-green-beans

I love our pickled green beans – they are super easy to can and make the best appetizer when rolled in meat that has been smeared with garlicky cream cheese. I make a couple of batches each year. But what’s not so nice is the mess the pickling juice can make on my counters, pots and tools.

That’s where Bon Ami’s cleaning line and cute canning kit comes in.

I’ve used Bon Ami powdered cleanser for years – I love that it was “green” back when that was just a color (since 1886 in fact!), that it’s a great cleaner and yet doesn’t scratch sinks, tubs or counters.

As if that’s not enough, the iconic jar of powder with the little chick and the slogan “Hasn’t scratched yet” costs under a dollar. Which makes it right at home next to the vinegar and baking soda in my cleaning cabinet.

So you can imagine how excited I am to have Bon Ami as a sponsor this month on AOC and to be able to try out their “Chicks Who Can” clean-up kit. I think Bon Ami is a great fit for us here at AOC – frugal, environmentally friendly, and endorsing a DIY lifestyle that includes preserving the season’s bounty!

Included in the canning kit is Tangerine and Thyme dish soap which I used to wash my jars before canning and my pots and utensils when I was done. I also used their liquid cleanser in the same scent to clean the sticky pickling juice from my counters.

And I have to say – I really loved the scent! It smelled so fresh and clean, with no worries about how they got the fragrance, since I know that all their products are toxin-free.

In addition to the giveaway below, Bon Ami has generously provided these cute canning labels for AOC’s readers to download and use to make your jars look sweet for gift-giving (or for making your own jars look pretty!):

Oh, and you don’t have to can to be able to use this – it’s simply great cleaning supplies anyone can use – plus a really cute apron!

  13. Beth says:

So far, it’s been jams and more jams. Oh, and I did can cherries in pint jars and lots of tomatillo salsa. I am hoping to get some tomatoes canned. So much is ripe and ready to can so I have been busy every day. Love it. I hope I entered the give-a-way correctly as I love Bon Ami!

  16. Katie M says:

This is my first year water bath canning, and so far I’ve done a few different jams and tomato sauce. Once apples are in season I want to do apple sauce and apple butter. I really want to get a pressure canner so I can do beans and stock.

  17. Sakura says:

It feels like I’ve been canning all month! I have about 20 lbs of tomatoes left to can before the next batch comes on, also have 30 lbs of pears that will be canned this weekend. I’m patiently waiting for my habeneros to ripen so I can try some habenero jelly! Cute give away!

  18. Jenna Z says:

I’ve done the simple, safe things like salsa, tomato sauce and tomatillo salsa verde. And I’ve done freezer jams but those don’t count. :)

  23. One of these days, I’ll learn to can! I’m sure it’s in the memory banks somewhere, as I used to help my mom and my grandmother. Maybe this kit would give me enough incentive to get of my can and can. (Oh my golly that was corny!)

  24. Cindy Amweg says:

I normally can tomatoes, and juice and bread and butter pickles. We also make peach and strawberry jams. I love pickled green beans but have never tried to make them. I’d love to try your recipe. The giveaway looks great, I used Bon Ami cleanser several years ago, but have not tried the dish soap, etc. Thanks for the opportunity!

  25. Martha says:

I’ve always loved Bon Ami also – I didn’t have to worry when I was teaching the children to scrub!

  26. MaryB says:

Only pickles so far this year but I want to do tomatoes and these beans look wonderful!

  27. Martha says:

I have canned tomatoes, peaches, green beans (my kids learned to cut doing these), chicken, chili beans (yum), beef stew, pears, and all kinds of jam.

  28. Christine says:

I would love to learn to can. Now I just need my garden to produce enough to be able to can :)

  29. Mary Alice says:

I’ve used Bon Ami for years. It is a great product and such a reasonable price!
So far this year, I’ve frozen pesto, corn, tomatoes, blueberries, strawberries, peppers and beans. I will be roasting and freezing beans soon. Yesterday, I tried freezing beans without blanching. I sure hope I like them that way because it was definitely a lot easier!

  30. Shannon says:

I love to can and am hoping to can peaches and green beans this week. I love your idea of using pickled green beans in meat and cream cheese wraps. Yum!

  31. ChristyM says:

I can and love using Bon Ami in my kitchen – if I’ve spent all that effort making sure I am canning good wholesome food, who wants to ruin it with a bunch of extra smells and chemicals?

  32. Vicki Dixon says:

I love Bon Ami and didn’t even know they had a dish soap! Thanks for the info! I really hope to start canning again as soon as we get moved into our new home.

  33. Michelle says:

Because of the severe heat early in the summer, our garden was not very productive. I only froze one batch of your tomato sauce this summer! But, it’s really good! Thanks for the give away!

  34. Ashley says:

I love to can. My last batch was some strawberry jam made with honey instead of sugar. I have moved from Oregon (with my big kitchen and garden) to Nevada. The move has left me with no garden or big kitchen given we are living in a fifth wheel. I will find a way to overcome this inconvenience to continue to can.

  35. Debbie Clauer says:

I have not tried canning before, but I ‘ve admired it. Got just a few plants out late this year, but planning on a big garden next year.

  36. Cindy says:

I’ve canned….um…nothing. But I do have several cool bug specimens in a mason jar at the moment. Will that do?

  39. Janee says:

I had no idea Bon ami made anything but powdered cleanser. Would love to try this! As for canning, I have not canned in a number of years (we freeze more now because its easier). I have canned diced tomatoes, peaches, plums, anything else I had extra from the garden.

  40. Brighid says:

What a great idea! I never knew they made products other than the scrubbing powder which I have been using for way too long! I’d love to win this. And, yes, I’m a canner/preserver and can attest to the number of dirty dishes I’ve generated this summer!

  41. Tammy says:

Great post. I have never heard of Bon Ami before. I love that it is green. I am going to have to check it out. I have also never pickled anything, but cucumbers, and have never ate anything pickled other than pickles and beets. The pickled beans sound very good. I am going to see if you have your recipe posted. Oh and the give-away sure got my attention too.

  44. Tami says:

Thanks for all the great recipes. Your recipes are my “go to” now for reliable, safe, yummy canned goods. Your bean recipe is a lot different than the one I use so I will have to give it a try.

I usually can green beans each year and homemade soup. I can my own chicken stock throughout the year because there are few things on earth better than homemade stock. ;)

  50. Cilla says:

I love Bon Ami for years! I remember seeing a factory with a giant can of it on the roof…well, the can was probably empty! lol

  53. Katrina says:

Every year we can a bunch of salsa’s and relishes! We also love pickled foods: asparagus and beets. And of course jams and preserves.

  54. Jennifer Gober says:

I have always wanted to can since watching my grandmother make bread and butter pickles growing up. I finally received her old recipes so I will be starting my own soon. First I will be making her cinnamon candy applesauce since apples are coming in now.

I have only canned freezer jam, but I am dying to try canning for “real”!

  59. Mary says:

I’ve been looking for a good non-toxic dish soap. I wasn’t aware that Bon Ami made any. It would definitely come in handy when washing all those jars for tomato sauce, pickled beets, etc. I haven’t tried pickled green beans – my family is pretty picky about what pickled vegetables they’ll eat!

  60. I’ve never canned before, but I want to do pizza and spaghetti sauces and pie fillings.

  61. Melissa M says:

I would love to receive this wonderful giveaway. Thanks for the chance.

  62. Lauren says:

I’m excited cause I wasn’t aware Bon Ami made dish soap! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  64. Carmela says:

Love dilly beans! I made some last week. This week is pears and more tomato products. Considering what my kitchen looks like at the end of canning season I could use some good cleaning products!

  69. Meredith says:

I’ve never canned, but I want to try it one day. My daughter, God bless her , has given me canned salsa, jam, and pickles. She had to have gotten the talent from her Grandmother(my mother), and great Grandmother(My grandma). She was able to learn from them. I guess I was to stubborn lol. However, I did learn how to use Bon Ami from my grandma and mother! lol Go figure. I was surprised to see that they have so many other products available!

  70. Shelby says:

My mother-in-law is teaching me to can! We do whole tomatoes, tomato juice, salsa, rotel, pizza sauce, “v8″, green beans, mild peppers, jalapenos and sometimes pickles. We also freeze several things including corn which can be quite a challenge to clean up, so Bon Ami would come in handy!! I do want to try your pickled green beans soon!

  71. Sandra says:

I canned some apple butter (already) and some peach preserves, but I made a mistake on both of leaving some air bubbles in the sides. I’ve been keeping them in the fridge just in case. :)

  72. Cheryl Pitt says:

I would love to win this! Bon Ami was one of my favorites, but I can’t find it around here anymore. It’s frustrating because it really was a favorite cleaner of mine. I wonder if I can request my local grocery stores to carry it…now there’s a thought!

Love Bon Ami cleanser but had no clue they made other products–time to talk to my grocery store mananger about carrying those!

  76. Elaine Harman says:

So far this year I have canned sweet pickles, sweet pickle relish, chili sauce, pizza sauce, ketchup and today did 15 quarts of spaghetti sauce. Our tomatoes have done very well. Still have a bunch more to do. Would love to win this cleaning kit!!

  77. I just learned to can last season with jams and preserves. This year I’ve canned beef {when my freezer died unexpectedly & I needed to save the few grass-fed roasts that thawed completely before the new one was up and running}, beans, tomato sauce, and peach pie filling. Ready to start applesauce soon. :-) Thanks for the chance to win.

  78. Heather says:

I’ve done green beans, jams & jellies, tomatoes of all sorts, salsa, green tomato relish (which really didn’t taste very good!), applesauce… that’s all I remember right now. Just tasted pickled green beans last night from a friend and I LOVED them! I want to do some next year!

  84. shannon says:

My mother used Bon Ami when I was a kid, just learning to scrub the baseboards with a toothbrush. ;) I since grew up and tried so many different products, but guess what is in my cleaning cabinet now…… BON AMI!! Its great!!

  85. Eletha Owens says:

I used to can peaches when I used to visit my grandparents during the summer. The preserves were always delicious when spread on my grandmother’s biscuits. Yummy!!!

  87. cintra says:

bon ami works for everie little thing!

  88. Brenda S. says:

  89. Trish says:

I’ve made strawberry freezer jam, peach freezer jam, and frozen other fruits and veggies. I don’t can, but I am a wiz with the freezer ;)

  90. Angie says:

I would love to try these products! I love finding new ways to clean “non-toxically”!

  91. Canning? Freezing? Applesauce, dilly beans, jam, jam, and more jam. :) Once my tomatoes are ready, it’ll be tomato sauce! Btw, I use Bon Ami for my sinks and to clean my glass cook top — love it!

  92. Heather says:

I can everything I can! :) Today it is bread and butter pickles, zucchini relish, garlic dill pickles and hopefully salsa. A few hundred jars a year at least…some water bath, some pressure canning and it isn’t a day if an empty jar isn’t waiting in the dishes! At least for 3 seasons of the year…these days we aren’t emptying many, just filling!

  93. Linda Gordon says:

I canned mixed berry jam and am about to do tomatoes and pears. I don’t do as much canning here in California since my garden is so small, I can garden year round, and buying food to can is a lot more expensive here in CA than in OR.

  94. Anna-Leigh says:

You know, I’ve only made freezer jam. So I’m not sure that actually counts as canning. But I think I’ve decided that next year will be my year to garden, and hopefully try out canning!

  95. terri says:

I had no idea Bon Ami made this many products! I need to hunt up and down the grocery aisle more often!

  96. Melody says:

I can salsa, jelly, tomatoes, etc.

  97. Julie says:

    tomatoes and strawberry jam thanks

  98. Angela O says:

I would love to win this giveaway! I love cleaning with vinegar, however I still haven’t convinced my “bleach loving” husband..lol With this cleanser package, I think we could reach a very nice compromise =)

  99. heather says:

I’ve canned pickles, plums, and syrups (failed jams) so far this year. Tomatoes are next!

  100. I haven’t canned in years. I need to start.

  101. Peggy says:

Made four pints of blueberry freezer jam but would like to do the traditional canning for jelly this fall.

  102. Tori says:

My father in law cans and is generous enough to share. I LOVE his strawberry jam. Now that I’ve got some extra cabinet space I’d like to try my hand at canning some things myself. I’m always on the lookout for “green” cleaning products that actually work well (and don’t cost a fortune)

  103. Peggie Russo-Millard says:

Love Bon Ami but can’t find it anywhere in Nashville area.
